AI SEO at RMG

Ranked, and still not the answer

Page one.
Nobody saw it.

An SEO program can be working exactly as designed and still lose the sale, because the shopper never reaches the result. Six ways a ranking store goes unquoted.

  1. The answer arrives before the results do

AI Overviews and AI Mode summarise the page above the link. Ranking first still matters, because the summary is built from what ranks, but the click is no longer the default outcome of the ranking.

  2. Ranking signals and citation signals are not the same list

Links and authority still move rankings. What gets a brand quoted is closer to whether the fact a shopper asked for is on the page, in text, stated plainly, and agrees with the markup around it.

  3. The content ranks because it is long, not because it answers

A 2,000-word buying guide can rank and still be useless to an engine that wants one sentence it can lift. Pages written to hold attention are not written to be quoted.

  4. Googlebot reads the page, the other crawlers do not

Google renders JavaScript. Most answer engines read the HTML the server sends and stop. A storefront that ranks fine can be an empty shell to OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.

  5. The SEO agency cannot ship the fix

Rendering, schema, feeds, and robots rules are storefront code. An agency that works in the CMS files a ticket and waits, and the ticket competes with the roadmap.

  6. Search Console shows none of it

There is no impressions report for ChatGPT. A program measured only on rankings and organic sessions cannot see the channel that is taking the answer, so it keeps optimising the half it can see.

AI SEO

One program. Both readers.

Most of this is SEO you would recognise, done properly. The difference is what it is aimed at: a page that ranks for a person and reads cleanly for a machine, measured on both.

01 · Shared ground

The SEO that already counts twice

Technical SEO was always about making a page easy to read for something that is not a person. That work now has a second audience, and it is the cheapest part of AI visibility because you are likely already doing it.

  • Server-rendered pages and templates

  • Core Web Vitals on field data

  • Internal linking and site structure

  • Sitemaps, canonicals, and freshness

  • Product and category page depth

02 · What AI adds

The work SEO never had to do

Four things a ranking program has no reason to touch, and an answer engine cannot get past. This is where an AI SEO engagement spends its first month.

  • Crawler access per engine

  • Entity markup and one consistent name

  • llms.txt and a plain-language site brief

  • Reviews and policies in readable text

03 · Content

Written to rank. Edited to be quoted.

The same page can do both, but only if the facts a shopper asks about are findable in a sentence. We do not rewrite a library; we make the pages that already rank answer the question they rank for.

  • Answer-first openings on commercial pages

  • Specifications as text, not as an image

  • Comparison and alternative pages

  • FAQ and policy content that agrees with the markup

04 · Measurement

Two reports, one plan

Rankings and sessions keep their report. Citations get their own, because nothing in Search Console will tell you the engines have started quoting a competitor instead.

  • Rankings and organic revenue

  • Citation share across four engines

  • AI referral traffic split out in GA4

What goes wrong

Two budgets.
One crawl.

The common failure is not technical. It is running AI visibility as a second programme with its own agency, its own report, and its own opinion about the same page.

  • Two agencies editing the same template

    What it costs you

The SEO agency and the AI visibility vendor both want the product template changed, in different directions, and the developer arbitrates between two sets of advice.

    What we do

One team owns the template and both outcomes. Rankings and citations are two acceptance criteria on the same ticket, not two projects.

  • Content written for the engine, unreadable for the shopper

    What it costs you

Pages stuffed with restated facts and question headings read like a machine wrote them for a machine. Conversion falls while citation share rises, and the channel nets out flat.

    What we do

Answer-first, then the persuasion. The first paragraph states the fact plainly for whoever is reading; the rest of the page still sells.

  • Schema that contradicts the page

    What it costs you

Markup saying one price, the page saying another, reviews in the markup that no longer exist. An engine that finds the contradiction stops trusting the source and quotes a retailer instead.

    What we do

Schema generated from the same data the page renders, validated in CI, so the two cannot drift apart between deploys.

  • Blocking the training bot and losing the search index

    What it costs you

A rule written to keep content out of model training also removes the store from ChatGPT search, because the two jobs use different agents and one robots.txt line caught both.

    What we do

Access decided per agent and written down: which crawlers index, which train, and which you are choosing to refuse, with the trade-off stated before anyone signs off.

Scan first.
Then decide.

Paste your store’s address. In a few seconds you see which AI crawlers can reach it, whether the catalog is readable without JavaScript, what your structured data says about you, and what to fix first. No email needed.

  1. 1. Crawler access, engine by engine

The verdict robots.txt gives each agent, including the three OpenAI runs for different jobs.

  2. 2. Readable without JavaScript

How much of the page a crawler that does not run scripts can read, and whether the product facts are in it.

  3. 3. Entity and product schema

Organization, WebSite, Product, reviews, and policies, and whether the markup agrees with the page.

  4. 4. What to fix first

Three findings, ordered by how much each moves the score, each with its measurement.

THE QUESTIONS YOU HAVE -

Get them out
of the way.

Search engine optimization done for two readers at once: the ranking systems that decide what appears in results, and the answer engines that decide what gets quoted above them. Most of the technical work is shared, because both want a page a machine can read without running JavaScript. What is new is crawler access per engine, entity markup, content written so a fact can be lifted in one sentence, and measurement, since no ranking report shows citations.
