The speed review

Fast in the lab.
Slow on a phone.

Most stores we look at pass a desktop Lighthouse run and fail Core Web Vitals in the field, because the lab test runs on a fast machine with an empty cart and no apps firing. Six things we find in the first week.

  1. Apps that each load their own script

Reviews, popups, chat, analytics, and testing tools each ship a bundle. Twelve apps means twelve requests in the way before the product image appears.

  2. Hero images sized for a monitor

A 2,400 pixel hero served to a phone on a cellular connection is the largest cause of a slow Largest Contentful Paint we see, and the cheapest to fix.

  3. Fonts that flash or block

Three weights of two families, loaded late, so the text repaints or the page waits. One preloaded face and a fallback stack fixes both.

  4. Layout that jumps as it loads

Announcement bars, late badges, and images without dimensions push the page around under the shopper’s thumb, and Cumulative Layout Shift records every jump.

  5. A server that thinks before it answers

On Adobe Commerce and headless builds, uncached pages, slow queries, and third-party calls in the request path add seconds before the first byte.

  6. Nobody reading the field data

The team checks a lab score after a release. The Chrome User Experience Report says what shoppers actually got, by page type and device, and that is the number Google ranks on.

Site speed

Every millisecond, accounted for.

Four groups. What the browser has to download, what it has to run, how fast the server answers, and how the result is measured in the field, so a win is a win for shoppers rather than for a lab score.

01 · Delivery

Less to download

Bytes are the first problem. Images, fonts, and scripts sized and served for the device that is asking.

  • Image sizing, formats, and lazy loading

  • Font preloading and fallback stacks

  • Critical CSS and deferred styles

  • CDN and edge caching

  • Video and embeds loaded on demand

02 · Scripts

Less to run

The main thread is where phones lose. App scripts, tag managers, and theme JavaScript budgeted and deferred.

  • App and third-party script audit

  • Tag manager and consent load order

  • Theme JavaScript splitting and deferral

  • Hydration cost on headless storefronts

  • Interaction to Next Paint on cart and filters

03 · Server

A faster first byte

Response time is the floor everything else stands on. Caching, queries, and the request path on the platform you run.

  • Full-page and edge caching

  • Database and indexer tuning on Adobe Commerce

  • API and GraphQL call batching on headless

  • Search and pricing calls out of the critical path

  • Hosting, PHP, and Node configuration

04 · Measurement

Proven in the field

Lab scores are a guide; the Chrome User Experience Report is the verdict. We report on what shoppers got.

  • Core Web Vitals by page type and device

  • Real-user monitoring

  • Release-by-release comparison

  • Speed tied to conversion and revenue

What goes wrong

Four ways stores
slow down. Handled.

The findings the free audit turns up most often, what each one costs while it waits, and the fix. Every one shows in field data within a month.

  • The app stack nobody audits

    What it costs you

Every app added since launch loads on every page. The product page waits on a review widget the shopper has not scrolled to yet.

    What we do

A script inventory with the cost of each, apps removed or loaded on interaction, and a budget the theme enforces on new ones.

  • Images the phone never needed

    What it costs you

The largest image on the page decides Largest Contentful Paint. Oversized heroes and old formats add seconds on mobile.

    What we do

Responsive sizes, modern formats, a priority hint on the hero, lazy loading below the fold, and a CDN that resizes on the fly.

  • A layout that will not sit still

    What it costs you

Late bars and badges shift the buy button under a shopper’s thumb. Mis-taps become bounces, and Cumulative Layout Shift records every one.

    What we do

Reserved space for everything that loads late, explicit image dimensions, and fonts that do not reflow the page.

  • A lab score that lies

    What it costs you

A desktop Lighthouse pass reassures the team while field data on mobile fails, and field data is what Google ranks on.

    What we do

Field data by template and device as the target, a release-by-release comparison, and a monthly read that ties speed to conversion.

Free website audit

Your speed.
Our notes.

Run the free website audit for the speed signals any browser can see: page weight, blocking scripts, image sizing, and the platform and apps the store loads. Then, if you want it, the five-day audit adds field data and a fix list in order. Yours to keep.

  1. 1. Speed signals in a minute

Page weight, blocking scripts, image sizing, and third-party load, read from the public page.

  2. 2. Field data by template

Core Web Vitals from real shoppers on the homepage, collections, product pages, and cart, by device.

  3. 3. The script inventory

Every app and tag, what it costs, and which can go, defer, or load on interaction.

  4. 4. Server response read

Time to first byte by page type, caching state, and what sits in the request path.

  5. 5. The first three fixes

In order, with the field metric each one should move within the month.

Other options

A speed app, a new theme, or us.

An honest read on the alternatives. Most speed work fails because it treats the symptom on the page and not the cause in the stack.

WE GOT THE WHOLE PACKAGE

to this story.

Design, development, and digital marketing all live under one roof. The same team that builds your store also designs it and runs the paid, lifecycle, and CRO work behind it, so nothing gets lost in a handoff.

THE QUESTIONS YOU HAVE -

Get them out
of the way.

Google’s thresholds are a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, an Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, and a Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, each measured at the 75th percentile of real visits over the previous 28 days. A page passes when all three are inside the line on the device being judged, and mobile is where most stores fail. We report against those thresholds by template and device rather than against a single lab score.
