We’ve read your app bill
“We’ll just add
an app for that.”
an app for that.”
Shopify’s great trade is that you stop owning infrastructure. The failure mode is that you start renting functionality instead, one app at a time, until the storefront is slow and nobody can say what any of it does.
Thirty-one apps installed, and nobody can name what eleven of them do
Every app is a script on your storefront, a monthly line item, and a company that can change its pricing or disappear. We audit what is installed, remove what has been abandoned, and build the small pieces rather than paying rent on them.
A theme that was customized so heavily it can no longer take an update
Edits made directly to theme files are the reason a Shopify store stops being upgradeable. Sections, blocks, and app extensions do the same job and survive the next release, which is the whole point of being on a hosted platform.
A checkout that was customized before Checkout Extensibility, and now cannot be
checkout.liquid is gone. Script tags and additional scripts have to be rebuilt as checkout UI extensions and Functions. It is real work, and it ends with customizations that survive platform updates instead of breaking on them.
A Core Web Vitals score that looks fine in the lab and fails on a phone in a parking lot
Lab scores flatter you. Field data does not. Image discipline, third-party script budgets, and what you ship above the fold are what move the numbers Google actually uses.
Wholesale run as a password-protected storefront and a spreadsheet
B2B on Shopify handles company accounts, price lists, and payment terms natively on Plus. Most brands running a hidden storefront could stop, and do not know the feature exists.
An ERP integration that is a nightly CSV and a person who watches it
Real-time inventory, customer-specific pricing, and two-way order sync are middleware, not a connector you hope covers your edge cases. Partial shipments and returns are where the generic ones stop.

Shopify’s problems are well documented, which is the good news. Here are the ones that actually show up in a Plus store, and what each one costs you if nobody owns it.
Product option and variant ceilings
What it costs you
Configurable products (size, color, length, finish) run into Shopify’s option and variant limits and get split into awkward duplicate products, which fragments inventory, SEO, and reviews.
What we do
We model complex products deliberately: metafield-driven configurators, bundles, or grouped SKUs, so merchandising, inventory, and the PDP all still work as one product.
API rate limits breaking ERP sync
What it costs you
Shopify’s leaky-bucket rate limits throttle bulk inventory and price updates, so a nightly sync from the ERP runs long, fails halfway, and leaves stock wrong until morning.
What we do
Bulk operations and GraphQL cost-aware queueing, with retry and reconciliation, so inventory and pricing stay right without hammering the API.
Checkout you can’t change without Plus
What it costs you
Standard Shopify gives you branding and little else at checkout. Anything that touches the flow, from custom fields to shipping logic, is either impossible or a workaround.
What we do
On Plus, checkout UI extensions and Functions. Below Plus, we tell you exactly what is and isn’t possible before you plan around it.
Duplicate URLs from collections
What it costs you
Products live at /products/x and every /collections/y/products/x path, so internal links scatter authority across duplicates and crawlers spend budget on the wrong URLs.
What we do
Canonical discipline in the theme, internal links that point at one URL, and structured data that names it, so rankings consolidate.
Search that can’t find the product
What it costs you
Native storefront search matches titles and tags, not the way buyers describe things, so the highest-intent visitors on the site leave empty-handed.
What we do
Search & Discovery configured properly, or a dedicated search layer (Algolia, Klevu) with synonyms, merchandising rules, and analytics on the zero-result queries.
Transaction fees on your own gateway
What it costs you
Using a gateway other than Shopify Payments adds a per-order fee on top of processing. On real volume that is a line item nobody budgeted.
What we do
We model the fee against your processing rates and volume before you commit, and set the gateway up so the decision is made once, on the numbers.
