Shopify Plus
vs Shopify
vs Shopify
Is Shopify Plus worth it? What Plus adds at checkout, in B2B, and across stores, and when the upgrade pays for itself.

The short answer
Pick one.
Here's when.
Pick one.
Here's when.
- Plus
Pick Shopify Plus when
You need to change checkout (Checkout Extensibility and Functions), sell wholesale natively (B2B on Shopify), run expansion stores, or your integrations keep hitting API limits.
Pick Shopify when
Checkout customization, wholesale, and multiple storefronts are not on the roadmap. The storefront is identical, and the money is better spent on the theme and the marketing.
The tiebreaker
Checkout. The day there is a rule you need at checkout that branding cannot express is the day Plus starts paying for itself.

Both columns.
Every comparison on this site uses the same eleven criteria, and each platform is described in the same words wherever it appears. The last column is the only opinion on the page.
Pricing model
How do you pay for the platform, and what grows with you?
Shopify Plus
Enterprise contract, variable at volume
An enterprise subscription on contract, with a variable component at high volume, plus processing. The fee for an outside gateway is far lower than on standard plans.
Shopify
Subscription plus processing
A monthly subscription by plan, plus payment processing. Using a gateway other than Shopify Payments adds a per-order platform fee.
Our read
Plus is a contract with a variable component at volume and lower fees on an outside gateway. The storefront you get is identical.
Catalog and variants
How deep can the catalog go before something has to be split?
Shopify Plus
Same ceilings, higher API limits
The same product model and ceilings as Shopify, with higher API limits for keeping a large catalog in sync.
Shopify
Option and variant ceilings
Products, options, and variants, with ceilings on both. Deep configurables get split into duplicates or modeled with metafields and apps.
Our read
Same product model, same ceilings. Plus raises the API limits, not the catalog limits.
B2B and pricing logic
Company accounts, price lists, quotes, and where the price lives.
Shopify Plus
Native B2B on Shopify
Company accounts, catalogs and price lists, quantity rules, payment terms, draft orders. Punchout and pricing resolved live from an ERP still strain it.
Shopify
Not on standard plans
Wholesale runs as a password-protected storefront, an app, or draft orders until you move to Plus.
Our read
The clearest reason to step up: company accounts, price lists, and payment terms are Plus-only.
Checkout control
How much of checkout can you change, and who tests it?
Shopify Plus
Checkout Extensibility
UI extensions, Functions for discount, shipping, and payment logic, and branding APIs. Upgrade-safe, and the reason most brands step up.
Shopify
Branding only
Script tags and template edits are gone; anything that changes the flow needs Plus.
Our read
The second clearest reason. Standard gives you branding; Plus gives you extensions and Functions.
Hosting and patching
Who owns the servers, the patches, and the upgrades?
Shopify Plus
Hosted, with merchant success
Hosted and patched by Shopify, with a merchant success program, priority support, and higher staff and store allowances.
Shopify
Hosted and patched for you
You own the theme and the app stack, nothing underneath.
Our read
Identical. Both hosted and patched by Shopify.
ERP and integrations
What the APIs give you, and where the middleware starts.
Shopify Plus
Higher limits, plus Flow
Higher API rate limits, Shopify Flow for automation, and the same connector market. ERP pricing and inventory still land as middleware.
Shopify
Rate-limited APIs, many connectors
Admin API, GraphQL, webhooks, and a large connector market. Rate limits shape how bulk syncs have to be built.
Our read
Higher rate limits and Flow. If the nightly ERP sync fails halfway on standard, Plus is part of the fix.
Apps and talent
How big the app and agency pool is, and where.
Shopify Plus
Same apps, Plus-only features
The same app store and agency pool as Shopify, plus Plus-only features and Plus-certified partners.
Shopify
The largest in commerce
The largest app store, agency pool, and hiring market in commerce. Most needs have an app; each one is a script and a monthly bill.
Our read
Same apps and agencies; some apps and features are Plus-only.
Frontend and speed
What the storefront is built with, and how fast it is by default.
Shopify Plus
Same themes, same speed
The same themes and Hydrogen path as Shopify. The performance ceiling is set by the theme and the app discipline, not the tier.
Shopify
Liquid themes, fast by default
Liquid themes on Online Store 2.0, served from Shopify’s CDN. Fast when the theme and app scripts are disciplined; Hydrogen for headless.
Our read
Identical themes and Hydrogen path. Plus does not make the storefront faster.
SEO and URLs
How much of the URL structure you control, and the platform habits to manage.
Shopify Plus
Same fixed paths
The same fixed URLs and canonical work as Shopify. Each expansion store carries its own domain and sitemap.
Shopify
Fixed paths, duplicate collections
A fixed URL structure (/products, /collections) and duplicate collection paths to canonicalize. Metadata and structured data are yours to control.
Our read
Identical, except expansion stores each get their own domain to manage.
Multi-store and international
Several brands, regions, or currencies under one admin.
Shopify Plus
Expansion stores and Markets
Expansion stores under one organization for different catalogs or pricing, and Markets for regions that differ only by currency and language.
Shopify
Markets on one store
Markets handles currency and language on one store. Separate catalogs mean separate stores, synced by app or middleware.
Our read
Expansion stores are Plus-only. Markets is on both.
Who it fits
The merchant this platform is genuinely the right answer for.
Shopify Plus
Checkout logic, wholesale, several stores
DTC and wholesale brands past the point where checkout logic, native B2B, or several storefronts justify the contract.
Shopify
DTC, list pricing, thousands of SKUs
DTC brands with list pricing and a catalog in the thousands that would rather ship than patch.
Our read
Plus for wholesale, checkout logic, or several storefronts. Standard for everything else, and for longer than most brands think.
