Which B2B ecommerce platform is best? Five platforms ranked on pricing logic, catalog depth, ERP integration, and upkeep.

B2B ecommerce platforms compared

The ranking

Deepest first.
Cheapest to run last.

There is no best B2B platform, only the one your pricing fits. The ranking below runs from the deepest B2B engine to the one most merchants should actually buy, and the grid under it puts all five on the same criteria.

  1. Wins when

Deep B2B. Company hierarchies, shared catalogs, contract pricing resolved live from the ERP, requisition lists, purchase orders, and punchout are the platform rather than an app. Tompkins doubled new B2B registrations on it.

    The catch

You own hosting, patching, and upgrades, and the versions carry support dates. If your pricing fits in a price list, this is a tax you do not need to pay.

  2. Wins when

Straightforward wholesale at a fraction of the running cost. Company accounts with multiple buyers, customer-specific catalogs and price lists, quantity rules, payment terms, and draft orders for rep-assisted selling, on a platform that patches itself.

    The catch

Deep account hierarchies, punchout into procurement systems, and pricing that has to be fetched from the ERP on every request are where it strains.

  3. Wins when

Hybrid B2B and B2C catalogs, no gateway fee, and multi-storefront from one catalog. B2B Edition covers company accounts and roles, price lists, quotes, quick order, and purchase orders.

    The catch

B2B Edition runs as a separate app with its own portal, which shows in the buyer experience unless designed around, and it thins out at hierarchies, punchout, and live ERP pricing.

  4. Wins when

Layered pricing logic. The Rule Builder handles pricing by customer group, cart value, region, or attribute as configuration, and B2B Components add company accounts, roles, budgets, approvals, and quotes. Built for European multi-country selling.

    The catch

A thin US footprint: fewer agencies, developers, and connectors here than in Europe, which matters most if you expect to change partners.

  5. Wins when

The Salesforce-first enterprise, where Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, and the CRM already run the business and commerce belongs in the same estate. B2B is Salesforce B2B Commerce, a separate product on the Lightning platform.

    The catch

Priced as a share of revenue, with the smallest and most expensive talent pool on the list. Without the one-estate case, it is the wrong platform.

Same criteria

Five platforms.
One grid.

The criteria that decide a B2B platform, with each platform described in the same words it gets everywhere else on this site.

Every platform fits on this screen.

CriterionAdobe CommercePlusShopify PlusBigCommerceShopwareSalesforce Commerce Cloud
Pricing modelHow do you pay for the platform, and what grows with you?

License on revenue, or free Open Source

A license priced on revenue for Adobe Commerce, or free as Magento Open Source. Hosting, patching, and upgrades are yours either way, and they are the larger cost.

Enterprise contract, variable at volume

An enterprise subscription on contract, with a variable component at high volume, plus processing. The fee for an outside gateway is far lower than on standard plans.

Subscription, no gateway fee

A monthly subscription by plan, tiered on sales volume, with no platform fee on outside gateways and your choice of processor.

Free Community, paid editions

A free open source Community edition, and commercial editions that add B2B Components, advanced search, and support. Hosting is yours in both.

Revenue share on GMV

A revenue-share license priced on gross merchandise value. The platform bill grows with every good quarter and is renegotiated at renewal.

Catalog and variantsHow deep can the catalog go before something has to be split?

No practical ceilings

Configurable and bundle products, attribute sets, layered navigation, and six-figure catalogs are what it was built for.

Same ceilings, higher API limits

The same product model and ceilings as Shopify, with higher API limits for keeping a large catalog in sync.

Higher variant cap, still a cap

A higher variant cap than Shopify, with modifiers for non-inventory choices. A configurable past the cap still gets split unless it is designed to the cap.

Deep, with Elasticsearch

Deep catalogs with properties and variants, and Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for search at scale. Six-figure catalogs run well once search is configured.

Enterprise catalogs, needs a team

Enterprise catalogs across sites and locales, managed as master and site catalogs with price books and inventory lists. Depth is not the constraint; the team is.

B2B and pricing logicCompany accounts, price lists, quotes, and where the price lives.

The deepest B2B module

Company hierarchies, shared catalogs, contract pricing resolved at request time, quotes, requisition lists, purchase orders, punchout.

Native B2B on Shopify

Company accounts, catalogs and price lists, quantity rules, payment terms, draft orders. Punchout and pricing resolved live from an ERP still strain it.

B2B Edition, a separate app

Company accounts and roles, price lists, quotes, purchase orders, quick order. It runs as a separate app with its own portal; deep hierarchies and punchout get thin.

B2B Components and the Rule Builder

B2B Components in the commercial editions: company accounts with roles, budgets and approvals, quotes, quick order. The Rule Builder handles pricing conditions as configuration.

A separate Salesforce product

B2B is a separate Salesforce product (B2B Commerce) rather than a module of the Commerce Cloud storefront. Most Commerce Cloud estates are B2C.

Hosting and patchingWho owns the servers, the patches, and the upgrades?

Self-managed, versions have dates

Self-managed, on your hosting or Adobe’s cloud infrastructure. Versions carry support dates; patches, upgrades, and monitoring are your job or your agency’s.

Hosted, with merchant success

Hosted and patched by Shopify, with a merchant success program, priority support, and higher staff and store allowances.

Hosted and patched for you

You own the theme or the Catalyst codebase, nothing underneath.

Self-hosted Symfony app

Self-hosted or on Shopware’s cloud. A Symfony application with a clean extension model, so any competent PHP team can read it. Patches and upgrades are yours.

Hosted, cartridges yours

Hosted by Salesforce, with the storefront code, cartridges, and integrations yours to maintain and release. Platform releases apply automatically; cartridge conflicts are yours.

ERP and integrationsWhat the APIs give you, and where the middleware starts.

Full APIs, queues, cron

REST and GraphQL APIs, message queues, cron, and a mature ERP connector market. Middleware for ERP pricing and inventory is normal work here.

Higher limits, plus Flow

Higher API rate limits, Shopify Flow for automation, and the same connector market. ERP pricing and inventory still land as middleware.

Open APIs, per-store quotas

Open REST and GraphQL APIs with per-store quotas, webhooks, and connectors for the common ERPs and PIMs. Large catalogs sync in batches.

Store API, App System, Flow Builder

Store API and Admin API, the App System, and Flow Builder for process automation. ERP connectors exist and skew European.

OCAPI, SCAPI, native Salesforce ties

OCAPI and SCAPI, vendor cartridges for most integrations, and native ties to Service Cloud and Marketing Cloud, which is the whole case for the platform.

Apps and talentHow big the app and agency pool is, and where.

Large, uneven, a shrinking pool

A large extension marketplace of uneven quality and a deep but shrinking pool of specialists. Fewer extensions is the best predictor of a cheap upgrade.

Same apps, Plus-only features

The same app store and agency pool as Shopify, plus Plus-only features and Plus-certified partners.

Smaller than Shopify’s

A smaller app store and agency pool than Shopify. A well-known Shopify app may be a build here.

Strong in Europe, thin in the US

Strong in German-speaking Europe and thin in the United States: fewer agencies, developers, and apps than any other platform here.

Smallest, most expensive pool

The smallest and most expensive talent pool on this page. Certified developers are scarce, and roadmaps stall on availability.

Who it fitsThe merchant this platform is genuinely the right answer for.

Deep catalog, ERP pricing, procurement

Deep catalogs, per-account pricing from an ERP, procurement buyers, and multi-store rules that genuinely differ.

Checkout logic, wholesale, several stores

DTC and wholesale brands past the point where checkout logic, native B2B, or several storefronts justify the contract.

Fee-sensitive, multi-brand, hybrid B2B

Merchants who want hosted operations without a gateway fee and expect to outgrow a theme, and hybrid B2B and B2C catalogs.

B2B open source, especially in Europe

B2B and manufacturer-led operations that want open source without Magento’s weight, especially anyone selling into Europe.

Salesforce-first enterprises

Enterprises where Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, and the CRM are already the system of record.

THE QUESTIONS YOU HAVE -

Get them out
of the way.

For deep B2B, Adobe Commerce: company hierarchies, contract pricing resolved live from the ERP, requisition lists, purchase orders, and punchout are the platform. For a straightforward wholesale operation with price lists and payment terms, Shopify Plus, at a fraction of the running cost. BigCommerce sits between them for hybrid B2B and B2C catalogs, and Shopware’s Rule Builder wins for layered pricing logic. The best one is the one your pricing fits.
